CES 2010 was all about 3D – Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Mitsubishi and anyone else that makes or sells any kind of video display. All were pretty impressive. Panasonic’s 154 inch Plasma was a sight to behold, but in 3D it was spectacular. The 3D that manufacturers are coming out with isn’t that cheesy hand reaching out at you from the screen, but the kind that adds depth to your regular viewing. Like looking out the window or standing on the sidelines watching your favorite football team.

Panasonic’s booth was long and filled with 3D. They also announced that they have partnered with Skype and Directv. Skype will allow users Panasonic to Panasonic and Computer to Panasonic internet based communication with video. Directv will have a dedicated HD 3D channel. Panasonic and Directv have also partnered with the winter Olympics to broadcast them in HD 3D on that channel.

Samsung’s booth was awe inspiring. It had video monitor flowers twenty plus feet tall reaching up to its mirrored ceiling that covered the whole booth. Samsung chose to show, what looked to be everything that they make. From HDTVs to HTIBs, from cell phones to copies and printers it was all there.

Sony’s booth, not to be out done, had hard wood floors throughout. They, too, showed just about everything that they make. Their Playstation display was enormous, 8 plus full racecar cockpits for playing the latest Grand Theft Auto installment.

LG had a very classy booth. All white carpet, walls and DJ. They had an impressive display of OLED TVs.

Mitsubishi had some of the largest 3D TVs to show in their Mitsubishi truck. They were also touting that their TVs have been ready for 3D for 2 years.

All of the 3D displays looked great. Having 3D gave the picture so much depth and life, it was like being part of the action.

The first day of E3 has produced one major home theater announcement – Netflix streaming on the Xbox 360! Basically the Roku box functionality will be recreated in the new Xbox dashboard update coming this fall. This will allow Xbox 360 Gold members who are also Netflix subscribers to instantly stream over 10,000 movie and TV shows from the company’s Watch Now service.

For someone like myself who has been happy with both the Xbox 360 and Netflix for several years this is very good news and something I’ve been hoping for.

Prior to purchasing the XtraPower PRO charger with 4 Ni-MH AA batteries, I was going through 4 AAs a week in my XBOX 360 controllers. I have been surprised how long the charge lasts on the batteries and how quickly they recharge. Consequently, I have been recommending them to customers that are purchasing products that need AA batteries and have gotten great feedback. The charger can also charge AAA Ni-MH batteries.

I finally finished Bioshock for the xbox 360 this weekend. Now that I’m a dad I have much less time for video games and this one took me quite a bit longer than my kid-free friends to get through.

The game itself is a multi award-winning masterpiece, and played on an 80-inch HD screen with 5.1 surround sound it is a truly thrilling experience.

While much can be said about playing video games on a huge high definition screen what I will really remember was the incredible soundtrack and atmosphere created by the ambient sounds of Rapture. The decaying underwater city leaks, creaks, and is inhabited by all sorts of nasty creatures that don’t take kindly to strangers.

One of my favorite parts of gaming with a 5.1 surround setup is that you can actually play the game off of what you hear. When a bad guy comes crawling up behind you and off to the left you can turn to face him accurately based on sound alone. Something is flying at you from the right? You can hear it coming and deal with it long before it’s able to get a shot off.

I can’t recommend a proper sound setup for gaming enough. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 feature games that are mixed specifically for surround sound and many hours go into making sure things sound just right.

There may not currently be such a thing as in home Virtual Reality but a properly calibrated 5.1 system can trick your brain into thinking there is.
So I have owned a Panasonic TH42PX600 for about 2 years now and love it. I bought it because it was a great deal and I knew that Panasonic Plasma was top notch. I did not consider that I was going to be playing a lot of XBOX360 on it and my son even more than I.

So, after the first weekend of hours of playing the same game I came to work and was so excited about the experience that I had to tell my colleagues how awesome it was compared to the smaller non-HD TV I had been playing on. Then, my killjoy supervisor said “Do you have any burn-in?”

My excitement suddenly turned to dread as I thought about all the fun I had that may have permanently damaged my brand new TV. I had not even thought about it until he said that and had not watched anything except the video game. So, I rushed home that night after work to see how much damage I had done and sure enough on regular TV stations if I looked close I could see the energy meter at the top right of screen from my video game.

It was not painfully visible but it was still painful to me because I could see it and was afraid it would be there forever. So, as you can imagine I decided right then that I was not going to play video games ever again which sucked because they looked so good. I decided to leave it on that night with regular TV and see if I could “wash” it away. The next day it was still there and I thought I would cry so I left it on all day.

After awhile it did go away and I started playing video games on it again, of course, but would try to limit the amount of time and would make sure to leave it on some regular programming for awhile. I also read some articles online about the first thirty or so days are a very sensitive time for Plasma. Well, a couple years have gone by and we have played a lot of video games on it and on a completely black screen you can see the “image retention” from the last game we had been playing but on normal TV I cannot see any of the video game effects unless we just got done playing hours and hours and I really look for it, but after a little while it goes away.

In conclusion, my advice for customers worried about “burn-in” is don’t. You have to be careful for the first thirty days. You may see some image retention on a black screen, but it should not effect normal TV viewing. It is my experience that while it might be possible to damage a Plasma with a static image, it is very difficult. I certainly would not recommend a Plasma as a display device for static information.

I’ve been watching DVDs through my xbox 360 DVD drive for the past year or so until a clear winner came out of the HD DVD / Blu-ray war. Since Toshiba officially threw in the towel a few weeks ago I now know Blu-ray was the winner I had been waiting for.

Some people suggest that a PS3 is still the best Blu-ray player out there and if you’re in the market this should be your player of choice. I couldn’t disagree more. While the PS3 definitely plays Blu-ray movies well and my xbox 360 plays DVDs equally as well, the additional wear and tear on the gaming unit from movie watching is just too much.

Gaming machines are expensive and I want my gaming machine playing video games for many years to come – there are better ways to play DVD and Blu-ray discs out there. If you figure your disc drive will only play for so many hours before it breaks down you need to decide if you want those hours spent gaming or playing movies.

For my money I want a stand alone player that plays movies really well, and a video game console that plays video games really well. The Blu-ray standard if finally getting on par with what HD DVD had right out of the gate and prices are steadily dropping as well. The Panasonic DMP-BD30 was the first Blu-ray player to be Profile 1 compliant and is on the top of my list. The only thing holding me back is the knowledge that the next generation of Blu-ray players is right around the corner. With cheaper prices and better functionality now is a great time to take the plunge. Just don’t make your PS3 or xbox 360 do your HD movie watching for you – they were born to game.
