After several hours of research I discovered there is a wide range of air cleaner products available today. Throughout my research the Winix air brand were consistently rated as one of the top air cleaning products available. I finally settled on a Winix WAC9300 air purifier based on their 5 stages of filtering, including their proprietary PlasmaWave technology.

PlasmaWave is their first stage of filtering, and is essential to the success of the unit. The air passes through an electric pulse creating positive and negative ions otherwise known as plasma. These ions then interact with water vapor in the air to form hydroxyl radicals which are unstable molecules. These hydroxyl radicals then strip atoms from airborne pollutants to stabilize, thus destroying these pollutants in the process and forming harmless water vapor. This process can help eliminate viruses, bacteria, germs, odors, and chemical gasses.

The Winix WAC9300 also uses a washable pre-filter, True HEPA filter (99.99 efficient), nano-silver anti-microbial shield, and an enhanced washable carbon filter. This model also boasts an off timer, sleep mode, dust and odor sensors, light sensor, remote control, and a top mounted air out vent which allows you to place the purifier up against a wall. In addition to the great filtering, they are extremely quiet compared to other filters and very affordable. The WAC9300 is great for homes with pets and can filter a room up to 213 square feet. They also make the WAC9500 which is identical but can filter a room up to 284 square feet. If you don’t have pets but would still like to utilize the Plasma technology, the WAC5300 may be the right fit as it only has 3 stages of filtering but is good for up to 350 square feet of floor space.

Indoor pollution is on the rise as homes become better sealed and more efficient. Some studies indicate most people spend about 90% of their time indoors as well. Based on these eye opening facts, I’m very glad I invested in the Winix WAC9300 for my family’s health and my peace of mind!

Plus, the addition of wireless technology simplifies installation and eliminates the need for running wires all over the house.

I recently felt the need to add a video surveillance system to my house after my son’s bike was stolen out of the backyard. I didn’t want to hassle with running wires, so the Lorex LW2301 is an ideal solution.

The package consists of 1 wireless outdoor color night vision camera and a wireless receiver. You also get the mounting hardware, power adapters, remote control, and a SD card to get started. The receiver can accommodate up to 4 wireless cameras which means I can easily expand my system in the future.

Unlike other video systems, this unit records directly to an SD card and does not use a hard drive. A note on installation of the camera. The outside camera needs to be near an electrical outlet for power, luckily, I had one nearby and installation was a snap.

The wireless camera has a maximum range of 450 unobstructed feet, but through walls or floors may be less. I had the camera mounted outside in 5 minutes and 10 minutes after that I had the wireless receiver plugged into my TV. Once I connected the wireless receiver to my 52 inch HDTV, I was able to view a live image from the camera at any time with the TV remote.

Setting up the receiver is a snap as well. In the setup menu I easily set the date and time and programmed the camera to record only when motion was detected to save space on the SD card. The wireless receiver emits a beep sound and flashes a red light anytime motion was detected as an audible and visual indicator that there are new surveillance files to review.

I let the camera run for 24 hours and then checked the surveillance log to see what was recorded. I had about 20 different recordings to review and after discovering that each time motion is detected a new file is recorded and and labeled with the date and time so it was a breeze to find and review specific recordings.

The picture quality was decent during the day while the night videos are less detailed but acceptable, especially considering it records in infrared with no light. If the perpetrators are too far away at night, it may be hard to identify them.

So far I have not caught any prowlers, but I know if anything else goes missing from my property I will be able to provide the police with video proof of the culprits. I would highly recommend the Lorex LW2301 wireless surveillance system or any other Lorex products.

Quite simply the sound cards on most computers are not very good. They sound OK with the computer speakers but when you connect to a home theater or stereo system you can hear the flaws. You may hear a hum or very limited dynamic range with reduced high and low frequency response.

How do you get the best sound quality when connecting your computer to your home theater system? We’ve found a device that will dramatically improve the sound from your computer without costly upgrades to your computer of home theater system called the <a href="http://www.onecall.com/product/HRT/Music-Streamer-II/Digital-Audio-Converters/_/R-105454?PMNID=4490" "target="blank">HRT Music Streamer II high resolution USB D/A converter.

Having a high quality D/A (or Digital-to-Analog converter) is a key factor in getting the best sound quality and performance when you’re listening to digitally compressed music on iTunes or Windows Media Player. This where the HRT Music Streamer II makes the difference; instead of using the computer’s sound card to output the audio the HRT Music Streamer connects to a USB port on your computer. This way the sound completely bypasses the computers sound card and avoids the inherent deficiencies of the computer’s sound card.

An HRT Music Streamer II is a great gift, ideal for any music lover who wants to listen to music stored on their computer (MP3) or stream internet radio. For more dedicated audiophile stereo systems HRT also makes some even higher performing USB streamer D/A converters. The one you choose would be based on how important every bit of audio performance is to you.

Check out the full line of high performance HRT Music Streamer D/A converters available from OneCall.

As somebody who appreciates the outdoors and nature, I was pleased to stumble across the Meade DS-2080AT-TC Altazimuth Refractor Telescope recently. Knowing little about telescopes, I assumed many affordable telescopes were hand-held and anything on a tripod would be ridiculously expensive and reserved for semi-professional star gazer. I have been proven wrong!
With the AutoStar keypad, any one of 1,400 pre-programmed celestial objects can be selected and the telescope will automatically point in the direction of the object. Objects of interest include solar systems, constellation, deep sky, stars, and satellites. Not only can the telescope find the object you select, it can track it using the built in speed options. This ensures the object will not move out of the range of the eyepiece.

The #494 AutoStar keypad controls the telescope and moves it to what you would like to view. This keypad plugs directly into the telescope and is powered by the 8 AA batteries that are inserted into the telescope. Before engaging the AutoStar, you do need to properly level and orient the telescope with the built in levels and compass after which the keypad can be plugged in and turned on. The initial setup includes entering daylight savings info, zip code, date & time, then the auto alignment process. The telescope will automatically move to a bright star in the sky and you simply press the arrow buttons on the AutoStar keypad so the star is in the very center of the eyepiece. The telescope will proceed with a 2nd star alignment for increased accuracys.

Besides viewing objects through the telescope using the AutoStar keypad, you can also view events such as sunsets, moon-rises, meteor showers, eclipses, and the winter solstice. After setting date, time, and location, you can also select “tonight’s best” under the guided tour menu option and view the best objects in your area for that night. With all the great features and the low price, this telescope would be perfect for families, students or an aspiring astronomer.

My parents purchased a Vitamix blender 2-3 years ago. For months every time I spoke to my mom she was waxing poetic about what she had created using her Vitamix. She even took it with her when we went to the Organ coast! I thought she was a little nuts. Who takes an appliance with them on vacation? During our vacation she made us waffles from scratch that tasted like cookies but were much healthier than any waffle of cookie I had ever had.

A few months later I purchased my own Vitamix. I figured why not give it a try. My husband thought I was a little loony given that we had an industrial blender that he had bought me for a Christmas and a smoothie maker that did a fine job. He was not sure what the Vitamix would do for us that our other small appliances were not already doing. The first week of ownership I showed him! I was making smoothies that were amazing and in a fraction of the time! The Vitamix crushed the ice to a perfect texture. I am able to use the entire fruit (skin, seeds and all). Best of all there are no chunks that get stuck in a straw! I have made soups from scratch without using a stove or any other device to heat. I made a tomato basil bisque using all real foods from scratch. I have made my own flour using whatever grain (from flax seed to oatmeal) I wanted. My family is eating more fruit, vegetables and healthy grains than ever. The Vitamix was one of the best possible investments I have ever made towards the positive health of my family. I now take it along on our annual trip to the Oregon Coast!

Have you ever dreamed about a whole house audio system where each room could play something different yet still have independent bass/treble control? How about the ability to change the volume or input source without leaving the room? These options are available through the ZR4 multi-zone receiver kit by Niles.

Niles ZR4 Series 2 4 Source, 4 Zone Audio MultiZone Receiver

The kit includes the 4-source 4-zone digital receiver, four (4) weatherproof key pads, three (3) infrared micro flashers, and a learning remote control. The only other items you would need are speaker wire, cat 5 cable, and speakers for each location.

Although it is possible to install this in a finished house, it is much easier to install before the sheetrock is up. Assuming you will also have an Audio/Video receiver in the home as well, you will want to locate the Niles receiver in the same location nearby your CD player, satellite box, and other equipment. Since this is a 4-zone receiver, locate up to four areas around the house where you will want to install speakers and then run a pair of speaker wire and a single line of cat 5 to each room to where the keypad will be installed. From there, run speaker wire to wherever the speakers are located in the room and hook up the keypads.

You can connect three external sources to the ZR4 (CD player, DVD, satellite box, cable box, etc) in addition to the built in radio for four sources. Niles also makes an iPod dock which can be added to the system.

Here are some other highlights:

4 Ohm Stable Digital Amplifier

Remote Control

Plasma/LCD-Proof IR Sensors

Compatible with anoptional Niles DBI-1 Doorbell Interface

Independent bass, treble, and variable loudness controls

You can turn on the entire house (or a preset number of zones) to listen to the same source

You can program up to four zones so that turn-on, source selection, and turn-off work in unison.

Designed to manage source sharing with an independent home theater system.

Can be controlled by secondary control systems via RS-232 devices and/or discrete infrared commands

The possibilities are endless with the ZR4 as Niles makes other components that can be easily integrated into the system. One can even link 2 ZR4 units together to create an 8 zone system. Whole house audio systems can seem overwhelming, but Niles makes it easy with the ZR4 multi zone receiver.

With many households on high-speed internet, manufacturers are making devices that have an RJ45 ethernet connection on the rear jack pack. Potentially, the most exciting aspect of networkable A/V components is the ability to stream video over the internet straight to your existing television. Netflix has teamed up with a couple of manufacturers allowing its customers to stream video directly. All you need is a subscription to their $8.99 monthly DVD rental plan, high speed internet, and a compatible device. Currently, this service will work with the Tivo HD & Tivo HDXL, the Samsung BDP2500, and the LG BD300. Once all the hardware is in place, Netflix customers have access to over 12,000 movies & TV shows.

I purchased a Tivo HD through OneCall.com over a year ago and have enjoyed the benefits ever since. To begin taking advantage of the streaming service through Netflix took only 3 simple steps. First, I signed up for the Netflix $8.99 package (1 DVD at a time and unlimited streaming). Next, I clicked on “On Demand” on my Tivo menu and follows the links to activate the streaming capability. lastly, I logged onto Netflix and added 8 movies to my “instant” que. Initially i was a bit confused on which movies I could stream to my Tivo, but eventually i leared that I could either click the “watch instantly” tab at the top of Netflix’s web site and pick any movie there, or just look for the movies that had the “Play/ADD” link (movies that you cannot stream will just say “Add”).

I can’t tell you how happy I am with this new streaming service. When the movie first begins to play there is a status bar which shows how good the quality will be. Some internet connections may give you lower quality during peak hours, but I have yet to watch a video stream that was of extremely poor quality. There were a few movies that had lip sync issues but I think this was mainly due to peak hour problems through my internet provider. When i selected the same movie later, there were no sync issues. If I had to stop watching in the middle of the movie, I could beging again later exactly where I left off. Many of the movies I chose were movies I wanted to see but were lower on my priority list. There are also a fair amount of family and kid movies available. This becomes very important here in the Pacific Northwest when the weather turns cold and my existing kid movie collection becomes stale. Hopefully we will see HD content with 7.1 surround streams in the future.

CES 2009 – the Consumer Electronics Show – is kicking off next week “shrouded in a nimbus of recessionary gloom.” Some rumored products that I’m excited to see being released into the wild are the first-ever USB 3.0 Drive, LG’s skinny LH95 HDTV and LED backlit, net-enabled TVs. There doesn’t seem to be much hype out there around this years CES but I’m sure we’ll still be wowed somehow. Although, it’ll be hard to top last year jaw dropping 150-inch Panasonic plasma.
