Of course, with turntables one of the critical components you should be familiar with is the cartridge which holds the stylus and plays a key role in quality and characteristics of the music you hear from your vinyl collection. Let’s compare the design, performance benefits and effects of Moving Magnet and Moving Coil cartridges so you have a little more information next time your turntable cartridge needs to be replaced.

In high-fidelity turntable systems crystal and ceramic pickups have been replaced by the magnetic cartridge, using either a moving magnet or a moving coil. Compared to the crystal and ceramic pickups, the magnetic cartridge gives improved playback fidelity and reduces record wear by tracking the groove with lighter pressure. Magnetic cartridges use much lower tracking forces thus reducing the amount of wear and tear on the record grooves. They also have a lower output voltage than a crystal or ceramic pickup, in the range of only a few millivolts, thus requiring greater amplification.

Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges
In a moving magnet cartridge, the stylus cantilever carries a tiny permanent magnet, which is positioned between two sets of fixed coils (in a stereophonic cartridge), forming a tiny electromagnetic generator. As the magnet vibrates in response to the stylus following the record groove it induces a tiny current in the coils.

Because the magnet is small, has little mass, and is not coupled mechanically to the generator (as in a ceramic cartridge), a properly adjusted stylus follows the groove more faithfully while requiring less tracking force (the downward pressure on the stylus). There is a sub-category. Moving iron and induced magnet types (ADC being a well known example) which have the magnet fixed and move a piece of iron or other ferrous alloy in the field of the magnet to produce the signal within the fixed coils.

Moving Coil (MC) cartridges
The MC design is again a tiny electromagnetic generator, but (unlike an MM design) with the magnet and coils reversed: the coils are attached to the stylus, and move within the field of a permanent magnet. The coils are tiny and made from very fine wire, so are even lighter than the small magnet used in an MM cartridge, thus improving the tracking ability of the cartridge which can give extended frequency response as well as greater fidelity.

A disadvantage however is that moving-coil cartridges generate an even lower voltage signal than a moving-magnet type cartridge. This is because the moving coil cannot be large enough (it would be too heavy) to generate equivalent voltage levels. The resulting signal is only a few hundred microvolts, and thus more easily swamped by noise, induced hum, etc. Thus it is more challenging to design a preamplifier with the extremely low noise inputs needed for a moving-coil cartridge; therefore, a “step up transformer” is sometimes used instead.

Moving coil cartridges are extremely small precision instruments and are therefore generally expensive, but are frequently preferred by audiophiles due to their better performance.

The RW-10d features a 10-inch front firing driver powered by a 260-watt RMS amplifier and will give you the bass response you need to add some punch to most any home theater system.

Of course this isn’t your run of the mill subwoofer. As a part of the Klipsch Reference Series this subwoofer is packed with a number of cool features and technologies that make sure it sounds great, and is easy to use.

To start with, all woofers are not the same. The Cerametallic woofer Klipsch uses is more rigid than a paper cone driver while still being light and responsive to signal from the amplifier. Klipsch also incorporates their exclusive corner port technology making the port tube as long as possible without bending which reduces the “chuffing” or port noise from air rushing out of the subwoofer cabinet. All this serves to reduce distortion and deliver tight accurate bass whether you’re watching TV, listening to music or rattling the rafters watching your favorite movie on your home theater system.

Talk about easy to use; the DCS (Digitally Controlled Subwoofer) user interface places all the controls right on top of the subwoofer. That means it’s a cinch to setup and you can make adjustments to the volume, EQ mode, crossover settings and more quickly and easily. Imagine being able to adjust your subwoofer’s performance to an optimized output for Music or Movies with the push of a button. Don’t worry; there’s even a keypad lock function that means if you have little people in the house who like to push buttons your settings are safe.

They’re Back!! The NHT SuperZero 2.0 is essentially the same speaker with improvements in the crossover design and cabinet. Touted as a true high-end mini monitor speaker the SuperZero 2.0 definitely lives up to that claim and delivers stunning high frequency and mid-bass performance. For the best full-range performance I would recommend adding the Super 8 powered subwoofer to supplement the low frequency response.

You can even pair them with the Fatman tube IPod docks for a great IPod sound system.

Quite simply the sound cards on most computers are not very good. They sound OK with the computer speakers but when you connect to a home theater or stereo system you can hear the flaws. You may hear a hum or very limited dynamic range with reduced high and low frequency response.

How do you get the best sound quality when connecting your computer to your home theater system? We’ve found a device that will dramatically improve the sound from your computer without costly upgrades to your computer of home theater system called the <a href="http://www.onecall.com/product/HRT/Music-Streamer-II/Digital-Audio-Converters/_/R-105454?PMNID=4490" "target="blank">HRT Music Streamer II high resolution USB D/A converter.

Having a high quality D/A (or Digital-to-Analog converter) is a key factor in getting the best sound quality and performance when you’re listening to digitally compressed music on iTunes or Windows Media Player. This where the HRT Music Streamer II makes the difference; instead of using the computer’s sound card to output the audio the HRT Music Streamer connects to a USB port on your computer. This way the sound completely bypasses the computers sound card and avoids the inherent deficiencies of the computer’s sound card.

An HRT Music Streamer II is a great gift, ideal for any music lover who wants to listen to music stored on their computer (MP3) or stream internet radio. For more dedicated audiophile stereo systems HRT also makes some even higher performing USB streamer D/A converters. The one you choose would be based on how important every bit of audio performance is to you.

The Monster Turbine Copper Pro headphones are here to soothe your in-ear headphone woes. They sound great, are built extremely well and even come with a lifetime limited warranty to back it all up.

They have the potential to be a very dynamic headphone depending on what EQ setting you are using on your iPod or MP3 player, but overall are very faithful in their dynamic reproduction of the recording. In other words, they don’t give you a false sense of bass, midrange or treble. When equalized well, the bass is deep and powerful without drowning out the rest of the sound, the midrange is harmonic and the treble is clear and concise. They sound great with all types of music tested including: classical, rock, hip hop, jazz, blues, country, easy listening and everything in between. They come with more than a dozen different ear tips in different sizes and materials including the Monster SuperTips, which are incredibly comfortable and I can listen for hours without fatigue.

All in all, these are the best sounding in-ear headphones I’ve had the pleasure of using; and believe me, I have tried many. They are nearly guaranteed to be comfortable in any ear and they have the lifetime warranty that stands behind their outstanding build quality. Considering everything that goes with this package, even at the MSRP of $379 or $399 for the Monster Turbine Copper Professional In-ear Headphones with ControlTalk these should be high on your list as the last pair of in-ear headphones you will ever own.

Hi I’m Chad from OneCall.com and we’re talking about the Onkyo TX-SR608 7.2 home theater receiver which gives you 7 channels of full surround sound plus the .2 channels for your subwoofer. It has 6 HDMI 1.4 inputs, which now gives you audio return channel from your TV back to the receiver, plus with the 1.4 now we’re 3D video ready. It also has a PC monitor input so you can view your PC on your TV, and DCDI video cinema processing which will up-convert all your standard definition to 1080p HD. It also has Audyssey 2EQ speaker calibration which is an auto speaker calibration system that uses a microphone, but instead of just one spot it listens in several different spots to achieve the best sound for your room. The Onkyo TX-SR608 also features Dynamic EQ which keeps it sounding great even at low volumes and has Dynamic Volume which will eliminate those loud commercials and keep the dialogue easy to understand. This receiver features the Audyssey DSX which allows you to use it as a 5 channel surround and then use those two available channels in the front to either heighten or widen your sound stage. You’ll accomplish this by either using the zone 2 output, here or reducing the 5.1 surround and using these outputs. Because this receiver featurs Dynamic EQ, Dynamic Volume, Audyssey EQ and Audyssey DSX it meets the most stringent home theater performance standards and therefore has been awarded the THX Select 2 Plus certification. This receiver also has 100 watts per channel, supports Dolby True HD, DTS HD, has an optional hook up for HD radio, XM radio, Sirius Satellite radio and can connect with your iPod with the optional iPod dock.
