Are you ready for the next big thing in entertainment? 3D TV is here and we can expect this technology to grow in 2010—changing the way we watch TV forever.

Are you ready for the next big thing in entertainment? 3D TV is here and we can expect this technology to grow in 2010—changing the way we watch TV forever. 3D TV is a set that uses a three-dimensional presentation and a 3D display which is a device that projects a television program into a realistic three-dimensional field.

3D imaging dates back to the beginning of photography in 1844. In the 1950s, TV boomed in the US and 3D movies were produced. Recently, television stations started airing 3D content. 3D-ready TV sets are built to operate in 3D but can also display normal TV as well. Special 3D glasses may be sold separately. Mitsubishi ,Toshiba, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, and LG all plan on introducing 3D TVs available in most of their higher-end models sometime in 2010.

Some places have already tested this technology such as SKY 3D, which is broadcasting in Korea. This channel uses a resolution of 1920x1080i to produce 3D content. Starting in June, 2010 ESPN will launch a channel that will broadcast 3D sports and 85 live events a year. Also, the world will see the 2010 World Cup broadcast in this technology letting the fans become a part of the game. A 24/7 channel was announced to be released in 2010 as a combined effort from IMAX, Sony, and the Discovery channel.

So what will it cost you to impress and be impressed by this technology? The 40-inch models are sold for about $2000 with the cost of 3D glasses said to be around $100. For 3D without glasses needed, a Chinese manufacturer called TCL has developed a 42-inch LCD 3D TV called “TD-42F” which is only available in China. It currently sells for $20,000.

Controlling your home entertainment equipment can be done at the tap of a touchpad. The RedEye will make it easier for you to control your TV with your iPhone.

Controlling your home entertainment equipment can be done at the tap of a touchpad. Introducing the RedEye, a device that routes communication from an iPhone or iPod touch, created by the company ThinkFlood, to link technology and simplify life. RedEye connects the equipment and technology already found in most homes: Wi-Fi (wireless internet) signals and a personal iPhone or iPod touch model running iPhone operating system 2.2.1 or later version. The iPhone or iPod Touch communicates with the RedEye via a cell phone signal and the RedEye then relays the information to the equipment in question via infrared signal (the same technology used by remote controls). The tiny red bulb at the tip of a TV remote is the same technology that allows the RedEye to control multiple pieces of equipment. Multiple rooms in a house can be connected using one RedEye unit per room. Unlike high-end automation setups, this system is reasonably priced. ThinkFlood offers unparalleled customer service, and doesn’t require professional installation.

Turning an iPhone or iPod touch into a universal remote is as simple as downloading the free RedEye developed Remote application (app) from the iTunes virtual store .Once the app is installed on the Apple powered device and the RedEye is plugged in and turned on, connecting the two devices is simply a matter of syncing the technology. Since the RedEye-powered universal remote replaces each item on the network, the system has the ability to control devices that have the infrared technology.

Without the restrictions of one universal remote, everyone in the home can use his or her own iPhone or iPod Touch to control various devices throughout the house. Furthermore, each person can interact with the RedEye system simultaneously. The system configuration data is stored in the RedEye hardware itself, so synchronizing additional controllers and RedEye units takes place automatically. The system configuration can also be backed up to any personal computer and then used to restore the RedEye hardware without any difficulty through using the device’s homepage (http://redeye_[serialnumber].local/).

While the RedEye is designed to sync with Apple products, namely the iPhone and iPod touch model running iPhone OS 2.2.1 or later, the latest RedEye models offer an exposed URL command code, which means that users can access the unit from either a web browser or using an HTTP GET-compatible device. Imagine sitting on the couch, surfing the internet on a notebook computer and then opening a web browser, keying in a web address to access the Remote app and RedEye unit to set the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) to record your favorite show and turn on the CD player. Perhaps instead of a CD player, turn on an iPod dock to browse through your iTunes library. The Remote app can access the iPhone or iPod as one of the networked devices.

In addition to the traditional units, ThinkFlood also offers compact, travel size RedEye units. The Redeye Mini offers all the convenience of the standard model while costing less than $50. The mini requires no batteries, just that you plug it into via a device’s headphone jack. After the initial configuration of the Remote app with the iPhone or iPod Touch, the apple devices can easily move between the RedEye and RedEye Mini.

Exemplifying the capability and range of the iTunes App Store and iPhone 2.0, RedEye and the Remote apps take full advantage of the convenient and intuitive nature of the iPod platform.

Television technology has come a long way in the last decade. The most immediately noticeable change in TVs over the past decade is how slim they have gotten.

Television technology has come a long way in the last decade. The image quality that they display is clearer (the resolution), the darks have become darker and the lights lighter (the contrast ratio), and the number of images that can be displayed per second much higher (the refresh rate). All of these have dramatically improved the viewing experience of televisions in the home. However, maybe the most immediately noticeable change in TVs over the past decade is how slim they have gotten.

The old tube TVs that we all grew up with (CRTs or Cathode Ray Tubes) and the old-school big-screen TVs (rear-projection TVs) are quickly becoming unfashionable, inconvenient, and obsolete. In their place have emerged two key new types of screens – LCD and Plasma.

Plasma TVs

Plasma TVs display pictures on the screen using tiny gas plasma cells. Each of these plasma cells emits light and color, which means two things. First, it means that plasma TVs do not require any sort of backlighting like LCD TVs require. And second, it means that they can produce very dark darks and very light lights. Many home theater pundits recommend plasma TVs over LCD TV for this reason; although technologies like local dimming using LED backlighting in LCD TVs has started to close this gap.

There are several issues to consider with plasma TVs. Due to the nature of the plasma in the TVs, the screens have to be made of layers of glass, which often creates problems with glare in lighted rooms in the home. They have also had problems in the past of burn-in, although this has improved significantly in past years.

Plasma TVs are an improvement over previous TV technologies, but their market share in the flat-panel TV market is falling year after year to LCD TVs as LCD panels become more common and more economical to produce in large sizes.

LCD TVs

One of the biggest differences between LCD screens and plasma screens is that LCD screens require backlighting, which has conventionally come in the form of fluorescent lighting tubes. Although manufacturers have been able to fit these tubes into tighter and tighter spaces, a recent development in the market has revolutionized backlighting – the implement of LED lights in TVs, such as the Samsung C7000 Series.

There are three key advantages to true LED backlighting in LCD TVs. The first advantage is in power consumption – since LED lights do not require nearly as much power as florescent tubes, LED-backlit TVs consume less power.

Second, LED backlighting reduces the amount of space required within the TV, thus allowing manufacturers to produce extremely slim sets. Some sets, such as the LED-backlit LG 55LE9500, are less than an inch thick. This is a remarkable upgrade even from flat-panel TVs several years ago.

The third advantage of true LED backlighting is the ability to increase the contrast ratio through local dimming, like the LG 47LE8500. Since the LCD panel is illuminated by a series of LED lights instead of large florescent tubes, the lights can be dynamically turned off to create darker darks.

One thing to keep in mind is that some companies, such as Samsung, produce edge-lit LED backlighting instead of true LED backlighting. This means that instead of having LEDs directly behind the LCD screen, they install LEDs around the edge of the screen which shine on a screen that goes across the back of the panel, diffusing the light forward. This does reduce the number of lights required, but it also eliminates the ability to locally dim lighting to produce darker darks.

OneCall recently received a fan email from a customer and, as recognition of our expert knowledgeable sales associates, I am happy to toot our horn.

“I wanted to drop you a note about my recent Order #….

On December 31, my Sony KD-34XBR960 failed. It is still under Sony warranty, but because of my location, it will not likely be repaired until February. I have had the Sony KDL-46XBR8on my wishlist for quite a while so, I decided to shop for one, having no idea they had been discontinued. I discovered the only place to get one was refurbished from Sony for $2699 or new from OneCall for the amazing price of $1996. (Cheaper than what I paid for my
KD-34XBR960.)

I had never heard of OneCall or Huppinsbefore, so I did a little research into your history before having the confidence to make an internet order.

Within minutes, I received a call about a delivery address problem with my credit card. I resolved that and called back into your customer service department. The person who took my call not only was very knowledgeable about my payment and shipping issue, but was also knowledgeable about the product I had ordered. She explained how Huppins was able to purchase the remaining XBR8 stock and how many units were available. She was also up to speed on what Sony had coming out this summer. I found it to be a very enjoyable and informative call.

As soon as the TV shipped, I received the tracking information by e-mail and a link to the trucking company. The company, Con-Way, had a very detailed tracking system. Every time the TV moved, I received an e-mail of where it was and where it was going, with an ETA and a link to Google Maps.

The trucking company call me to arrange delivery one full day ahead of schedule and ahead of a blizzard. The TV arrived perfectly intact. No marks on the box at all. I was surprised to find it was shipped on a pallet to prevent damage. I was prepared to move the set into my house myself, but the truck driver actually helped me move it into my living room.

When the semi pulled up in front of the house, my roommate asked, ‘How big of a TV do you order?’ I replied, ‘The smaller one.’

I must say I was quite impressed by this entire process. Everything from the order, customer service, warehouse and trucking company was absolutely perfect. I will not hesitate to order from you again and I am recommending your company to my friends.

Thanks and Happy New Year!”

CES 2010 was all about 3D – Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Mitsubishi and anyone else that makes or sells any kind of video display. All were pretty impressive. Panasonic’s 154 inch Plasma was a sight to behold, but in 3D it was spectacular. The 3D that manufacturers are coming out with isn’t that cheesy hand reaching out at you from the screen, but the kind that adds depth to your regular viewing. Like looking out the window or standing on the sidelines watching your favorite football team.

Panasonic’s booth was long and filled with 3D. They also announced that they have partnered with Skype and Directv. Skype will allow users Panasonic to Panasonic and Computer to Panasonic internet based communication with video. Directv will have a dedicated HD 3D channel. Panasonic and Directv have also partnered with the winter Olympics to broadcast them in HD 3D on that channel.

Samsung’s booth was awe inspiring. It had video monitor flowers twenty plus feet tall reaching up to its mirrored ceiling that covered the whole booth. Samsung chose to show, what looked to be everything that they make. From HDTVs to HTIBs, from cell phones to copies and printers it was all there.

Sony’s booth, not to be out done, had hard wood floors throughout. They, too, showed just about everything that they make. Their Playstation display was enormous, 8 plus full racecar cockpits for playing the latest Grand Theft Auto installment.

LG had a very classy booth. All white carpet, walls and DJ. They had an impressive display of OLED TVs.

Mitsubishi had some of the largest 3D TVs to show in their Mitsubishi truck. They were also touting that their TVs have been ready for 3D for 2 years.

All of the 3D displays looked great. Having 3D gave the picture so much depth and life, it was like being part of the action.
