Marantz or Harmony Remote Control? So much control, so hard to choose.

July 14th, 2009 by Matt P

Although the Marantz RC3001 and the Logitech Harmony One remote controls are both programmed using computer software and a USB connection there are some significant differences between them.

Harmony One features:

  • Color, Touch Screen LCD
  • One-touch control using programmed Activities
  • Compatible with Windows® 2000, XP and Vista as well as Macintosh® OS X 10.3 or later
  • Lithium-ion rechargeable battery (charging station included)
  • 1-year warranty

  • Marantz RC3001 features:

  • LCD Display with hard keys for navigation
  • Pre-programmed to control Marantz products and other major brands
  • Simple Macro programming for One-Touch operation
  • RF control with included RF extender
  • Compatible with Windows® 2000, XP and Vista
  • Rechargeable nickel metal-hydride (Ni-MH) battery and AC adapter included
  • 3-year warranty

  • Both universal remote controls will give you the power and flexibility to control almost any A/V component or TV in your home. While the PC connectivity provides a much more user-friendly interface for programming either remote control the Wizz.it 3 software from Marantz does accommodate a more detailed customized programming of the remote control.

The most distinct advantage of the Marantz RC3001 remote control is the capacity to extend your control beyond a direct line of sight with the included RF extender. With a Radio Frequency (RF) remote control you don’t have to worry about pointing directly at your Audio/Video equipment. A great example is the Activity or Macro function. Take a second and think about how long it takes turn on you A/V system when you want to sit down and watch a movie. That’s about how long it takes the Macro function on a universal remote control to work since the remote control has to send the same sequence of commands. With an RF remote control you can start the sequence, then set down the remote control and go make popcorn while your systems warming up instead of having to make sure the remote stays pointed at your Audio/Video cabinet.

Between the Marantz RC3001 and the Harmony One they’re both great remote controls so make sure to evaluate how you control your Audio/Video equipment and let that help you decide. If you want the option of customizing the operation of the remote control or RF operation the choice should be easy.
