Mitsubishi Laser TV!

July 9th, 2008 by Patrick G

There is a new technology on the horizon for big screen TVs. It promises dramatic improvements in color, detail, and economy. Instead of an LED or projector lamp as the light source, these new sets use lasers!

Lasers do not fade over time or need to be replaced every 3-5 years, and they require less power to operate. Traditional light sources can only offer a small percentage of the color spectrum, while lasers are capable of reproducing almost 90% of the color spectrum the human eye can see. They are the first technology that will be able to fully take advantage of x.v.Color also known as xvycc color. Traditional DLPs cannot be hung on the wall. The new laser TVs are lightweight enough to be mounted on the wall. They do not fade over time like plasmas. Unlike traditional rear projection systems like DLP, which do not have a very wide viewing angle, the laser sets have an off angle range of 160 degrees.

You might expect them to be much more expensive since they are new technology.

Not so says Mitsubishi. They are stating the price will be comparable to other TVs of similar size. And the early reports from the consumer electronics show were all very favorable. Mitsubishi estimates they will start shipping the first 65-inch TVs in late June or early July. Keep your eyes peeled!

When he’s not selling Electronics and helping our customers at OneCall, Patrick enjoys working in his garden, cooking and playing video games on his Sharp TV. If he could have any electronics product available, at the moment, he would go with the 65” Panasonic 3D Plasma TV and if he could go anywhere in the world on an ultimate vacation he would go to Australia.

Will Samsung be doing the same thing?

There has been some talk of Samsung developing laser TVs but they’ve been quiet about it lately. I wouldn’t be surprised if most manufacturers will wait to see how well this technology sells for Mitsubishi before they move forward.
